We are thrilled to announce a special opportunity during National Recovery Month to obtain free naloxone. Naloxone is a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It binds to opioid receptors in the brain and can reverse and block the effects of opioids, quickly restoring normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing with heroin or opioid pain medications. NADCP’s Adult Drug Court Best Practice Standard VI: Complementary Treatment and Social Services states that treatment courts should educate participants on ways to prevent and manage overdose and “support local efforts to train drug court personnel, probation officers, law enforcement, and other persons likely to be first responders…on the safe and effective administration of…naloxone.”

In recognition of your life-saving work, the kaléo Cares Product Donation Program has made EVZIO (naloxone HCl injection) available to treatment courts completely free of charge. NADCP is grateful for kaléo for this generous offer and we encourage all treatment courts to apply. The application deadline is Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

kaléo does not provide formal training to administer naloxone; fortunately, NDCI provides comprehensive, online naloxone training for treatment court professionals and families. We strongly encourage you to use our video curriculum to train yourself, family, colleagues, etc. on how to properly and safely administer naloxone.

Please note:

Toward the beginning of the application, a yes/no question asks, “Do you have a medical director or healthcare provider with the prescribing authority who can take responsibility over receipt of EVZIO?” The medical prescriber does not have to be a member of your treatment court staff. It simply must be a medical professional licensed by your state to prescribe naloxone who is willing to serve as the prescribing authority for your application.
