Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts

The Native American/Alaska Native Drug Court Project, funded through a cooperative agreement between NADCP and the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Drug Court Programs Office (DCPO), is NADCP's latest practitioner-focused project. This project provides technical assistance to help tribes develop drug courts within tribal governments.

In the program's second year of operation, 22 tribal planning and implementation OJP grantees participated in culturally sensitive workshops. This practitioner-based technical assistance program utilizes the NADCP Mentor Drug Court Network to provide technical assistance at regional sites across the country.
In September of 1997, the first planning workshop was held at the rural Stillwater, Oklahoma Mentor Court site. NADCP held follow-up trainings at the Louisville, Kentucky Mentor Court site in December of 1997 and in Albuquerque, New Mexico in February of 1998.
The Blackfeet Tribe in Browning, MT; Duckwater Shoshone Tribe in Duckwater, NV; Fort Peck Assinibone & Sioux Tribe in Poplar, MT; the Hualapi Tribe in Peach Springs, AZ; the Makah Tribe in Neah Bay, WA; and the Poarch Band of the Creek Indians in Atmore, AL; are the first six operational tribal drug courts.
