The Role of the Federal Government in Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice

NADCP is proud to endorse, “ The Role of the Federal Government in Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice.” Under the leadership of the National Criminal Justice Association, national public safety organizations recently met in Washington, D.C. to define the role that the federal government should play in both law enforcement and the administration of justice. NADCP participated in the meeting and has been working with the national public safety associations to collaborate on national priorities.

As a result of this meeting, the following priorities were established:

  • Governments share responsibility for “ensuring domestic tranquility”
  • Federal leadership is crucial to effective law enforcement and administration of justice
  • Changing crime trends challenge decision makers and practitioners
  • Yesterday’s strategic innovations are today’s best practices
  • Crime prevention and control is the core of homeland security
  • Congress and the Federal government should build on past successes to protect the nation from domestic and international threats

As a result of the President’s proposed reduction in law enforcement funding it is now more important than ever that our elected official are aware of this document. The President's fiscal year (FY) 2006 budget, released Feb. 7, recommends scaling back of federal justice assistance administered through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) by nearly one-half. The president's budget proposes reducing justice assistance by over $1.3 billion in comparison to FY 2005, when such funding totaled $3 billion .

NADCP encourages its members to make sure their elected officials are aware of the impact of the proposed cuts. Make sure your voice is heard! You can also access the publication online at http://www.justiceactionalert.info/index.html
